Application process

The application process differs, depending on whether you have completed your prior education in the Netherlands or abroad.

Please note: the information on this webpage applies to the start of the programme as per September 2025. As per September 2026 the programme will likely have a numerus fixus (capacity limit) for the English language track. This means that there will be a separate selection procedure and earlier deadline for admission (January 2026). Concrete information will be available in October 2025.

Students with Dutch prior education

If you have obtained or will obtain a Dutch secondary diploma (VWO-diploma or HBO propaedeutic diploma), please find information about the corresponding application procedure via the link below:

Students with international prior education

Deadline

For non-EU/EEA students and EU/EEA students with an international degree who require services from the UvA (housing/visa): 1 April 2025.
For EU/EEA students with an international degree who do not require services from the UvA (housing/visa): 1 May 2025.

After submitting your enrolment application in Studielink you will receive an email with your UvAnetID. You can use this to log in to the Enrolment Checklist, which is where you sign up for UvA Matching.

What is the ratio between international and Dutch students?
I am enrolled at a Dutch University of Applied Sciences. Will this Bachelor’s be difficult?

With a completed HBO propaedeutic year, you are admissible to the Political Science programme. Generally, we assume that you can handle the level of the programme. It is good to realise that our programme is a lot more theoretical than most HBO programmes, and that you have fewer contact hours and have to schedule a lot of self-study. But do not worry, you will not be thrown in at the deep end, we support you in developing academic skills. For example, during the first year and a half of your studies, you will have your own mentor who will guide you and whom you can turn to with all kinds of questions. If you need more support, the University of Amsterdam offers various free workshops and training courses to its students to further develop study skills.
