Researchers are involved in research related to historical, cognitive and cultural musicology, as well as participate in three of the UvA’s research priority areas. These include ‘Cultural Heritage and Identities’, ‘Cultural Transformations and Globalisation’ and ‘Brain & Cognition’ (interfaculty priority area).
Research is geared towards mapping out our sense of musicality, the role of the listener and metaphysical reflections thereon, and music’s role in the globalisation and transformations of culture.
Research is bundled in three research institutes, which include the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR), the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) and the interfaculty Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC).
Research is partly funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
