Historical, cognitive and cultural musicology form the three core themes of the study programme. Within the programme music is approached from a broad range of perspectives, ranging from music as artwork to music in a performative sense. Other areas of interest include the listener’s role in experiencing and appreciating music, the role of internet and new media, and the different philosophical perspectives on music.

The study programme deals with a diverse musical repertoire: from classical music to jazz and pop, from Brazil to India, the Middle East to Mongolia. The programme offers insight into the multitude of views and forms expressed by people within a musical context, across different societies and time periods.
