Religious Studies education is specifically focused on the contemporary diversity of European religions. This diversity is globally explored, both from an historical and topical perspective. The emphasis is on Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Western esotericism (magic, occultism, etc.)
The UvA is the only Dutch university offering a specialisation in Western esotericism, which is offered in the Master's Spirituality and Religion under the name of 'Spirituality and Esotericism in Western Culture'. Aside from the socio-scientific exploration of contemporary religions, there are also numerous possibilities for historical approaches and the acquisition of relevant languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, Greek and Latin.
The study programme offers ample opportunities for orientating oneself towards a future career; the programme allows for an internship in the multicultural and national environs of Amsterdam.
There are two Master’s programmes. The two-year Research Master’s (taught in English) is meant for talented and motivated students.
