The (Dutch-taught) Bachelor’s programme in Philosophy at the UvA offers students an extensive introduction to philosophy during the first year and a half. The following year and a half sees students choosing a specialisation and non-philosophical courses. During the Bachelor’s phase a general knowledge of philosophy is acquired by looking at current historical dilemmas. The history of philosophy is hereby given a less prominent role.

The one-year Master’s programme gives students the chance of specialising in a field of philosophy of their liking. The specialisations on offer correspond with staff members’ research programmes:

• Philosophy and Public Affairs;
• Logic and Language, Mind, Body and Behavior;
• Philosophical Tradition in Context;
• Critical Cultural Theory.

Students of the two-year Research Master’s programme Philosophy are also given the opportunity to specialise further in the four research areas, and are furthermore prepared for academic research.

At the UvA, students also have the chance of studying the philosophy of a particular academic discipline. In the two-year Master's programme Philosophy of the Humanities and the Social Sciences (also available in Dutch: Wijsbegeerte van een bepaald wetenschapsgebied), students combine a Master's in their own discipline with a Master's in Philosophy. The emphasis of this programme is on the philosophy of political and social sciences.
