Boer succeeds Prof. Agneta Fischer, who will step down as dean from September. The appointment was made in consultation with the Faculty Works Council and the Faculty Student Council.

‘We are very happy with the arrival of Christa Boer,’ says Executive Board president Geert ten Dam. 'She has extensive experience in education, research and administration. She mainly gained this experience at Amsterdam UMC, which, like the FMG, is a large and complex organisation. She is deeply committed to education, students, and important social issues - this is evident, for example, in how she has committed herself to discussing undesirable behaviour within Amsterdam UMC and other healthcare institutions. In her vision on health issues, she pays full attention to the influence of people’s social and physical environments. She also systematically seeks connections outside the walls of the university. She therefore fits very well with the social and people-oriented issues that are central to the education and research at the FMG.'

Boer: 'I am looking forward to working with colleagues and students to further shape this wonderful faculty and to helping to drive forward research and education into today’s major social issues.'

About Christa Boer

Prof. Christa Boer has been affiliated with Amsterdam UMC (previously VUmc) since 2007, first as an assistant professor and from 2014 to 2018 as professor of Perioperative Research. Today she is a professor of Medical Education at the VU. In this capacity, she leads, among other things, the project Training in a changing healthcare landscape, which aims to align the training of doctors with the Integrated Care Agreement. Boer has also been vice dean for Education at the VU Faculty of Medicine at Amsterdam UMC since 2018 and she also heads the Doctoral School of Amsterdam UMC.

In addition to her work at Amsterdam UMC, Boer has been a member of the Supervisory Board of Saxion University of Applied Sciences since 2022. From 2015 to 2021, she was an editorial board member of the leading scientific journal British Journal of Anaesthesia. Boer studied Biomedical Sciences at Leiden University. In 2001, she received her PhD from the VU with her thesis Pulmonary artery function and endotoxin: the dual role of nitric oxide.

Boer was the initiator of the #Artsenvoorhetleven (Doctors for Life) platform. This platform supports the movement being made within medical education towards the regional healthcare landscape and the so-called extramural professions, as well as data, AI and medical technology. She also initiated the app #zouikwatzeggen (‘Should I say something?’) at Amsterdam UMC for tips and reporting of inappropriate behaviour. This app has now also been rolled out within other institutions.
