The Schoof government’s education budget is expected to be approved soon by parliament. Although the planned cuts are slightly less deep than in the initial proposals, the consequences for higher education and the UvA remain highly unfavourable.

Chair Caspar van den Berg commented: ‘Academic research is the big loser in this deal. That’s especially bad for the future of the Netherlands, because knowledge is our most important resource. However, for our students the good news is that the fine for taking longer to graduate is off the table.’

Deep cuts to research budget

The proposal to cut nearly €2 billion has been reduced by €748 million, but significant budget cuts remain for research (€175 million in starter and incentive grants and €92 million in innovation) and for international students (€147 million).

The education cuts have a major impact on the UvA's budget. The UvA and other universities will continue to oppose these measures in the coming period. Let’s keep making our voice heard in The Hague.
