In the course 'Experimentation in the Social Sciences', my colleagues and I review with our students relevant types of experimental designs, as well as their strengths and pitfalls. While doing so, we discuss issues of operationalization, power analysis, the analysis and reporting of experimental data, and the ethics of doing experimental research. Importantly, we try to teach our students an academic attitude, what it means to conduct good research, and encourage critical reflection of published work.
I very much enjoy teaching the Research Master's in Communication Science, especially because of the very motivated and often times highly skilled students I get to work with. Also, since I have done quite some experimental research myself, I aim to bring my own experiences (good and bad) to the classroom and explicitly invite my students to think along. Our in-class discussions are often of high quality and engaging. As such, the Research Master students keep me on my toes – something which I appreciate a lot.
