Courses are taught by active researchers of the Faculty of Science and the Dutch research centre QuSoft, one of the world’s leading institutes for quantum software and technology. These quantum researchers are world-renowned experts in their field.
Study programme
  • Curriculum

Quantum Computer Science consists of compulsory core courses, restricted-choice and free-choice courses and a research project. In your first year you will take four compulsory core courses (27 ECTS) and choose 30-33 ECTS from the selection of restricted-choice courses. In the second year, you will work on an individual quantum research project for 30ECTS and can opt for a project extension, internship or free-choice courses for an additional 18ECTS.

The curriculum of the Master’s Quantum Computer Science leaves ample space for you to explore what you find interesting in and around the fields of quantum computing and quantum information theory.

  • Quantum Internship

As part of your second year, you may do an internship at a quantum computing company or related organisation. Quantum Delta NL (QDNL) can facilitate and coordinate a wide range of projects and endeavours with renowned scholars in the field of quantum computer science. An example is the Quantum Application Lab (QAL), situated at Amsterdam Science Park.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is there a pre-Master’s programme?

We do not offer a pre-Master’s programme

  • Is distance education an option?

The Master's programme Quantum Computer Science does not offer the possibility of distance education, since students need to actively participate in lectures and practical sessions to successfully complete the programme.

  • What kind of electives can I take?

We encourage you to take courses of your interest that complement the Quantum Computer Science programme. For instance, you can take a great number of excellent related courses from the UvA Master's programmes in Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics, Logic, Computer Science, and Chemistry. You can also enroll in courses from the national MasterMath programme. A comprehensive list of recommended courses will be provided to students.

Information and conditions about electives can be found here. Please note that due to limited capacity of the courses students of the respective Master's programme have priority.
