Alice Barlaam, student Political Science

I am Alice, a second-year Political Science Bachelor student from Italy. I was initially captivated by Political Science through a secondary education course. When exploring potential universities, I was drawn to the UvA because many people had told me great things about Amsterdam and the Netherlands.

Although I had never been here, I was curious to see what everyone was fascinated by. After learning that UvA is one of the best universities in Europe, I was convinced that this was the right choice for me.

Understanding and experiencing the world

I would recommend the Political Science programme if you have a genuine interest in comprehending political, economic, and societal dynamics. The topics are very up-to-date and have made me understand more about the world around me. What I like about this programme is its openness to the international sphere. Especially when approaching the political arena, it's essential to encounter different perspectives and cultures.

The teaching methods are different from those in my home country, but I found them even more engaging. The study incorporates hands-on activities that develop research and academic skills.

Finding your niche

The programme's structure allows you to shape your own academic journey. The first year and a half provide foundational learning, paving the way for specialisation. This helped me find the niche of topics I'm most passionate about and gave me a general direction for my education. In the third year, there are numerous options: study abroad, do an internship, complete a Minor, or follow preferred courses. I decided to go on an exchange to Tokyo, Japan, to complete my Bachelor’s.

Expectations vs. reality?

Prospective UvA applicants should be aware of housing challenges in Amsterdam. I cannot stress this enough: start searching for housing as early as possible. However, the city's appeal is undeniable. Amsterdam is great for student life, art, sports, and more. There's room for self-expression and extracurricular activities.

I am extremely glad that I chose to study here at the UvA, not only for its great education but also for all the other opportunities. I follow a French language course, participate in sports, and volunteer at a local women's shelter. If you are looking for a place to develop and grow your passions, Amsterdam is the place to be.
