Following this minor, you will acquire an advanced analytical framework which enables you to analyse complex economic processes involving risk from a quantitative perspective. Quantitative risk modelling, statistical and empirical evaluation, and optimisation are at the core of this minor programme. This minor programme enables you to develop skills to deal with complex and risky economic problems.

Study programme

The minor can be taken as a 30 or a 60 EC programme. For both options you have follow 2 compulsory courses. You supplement these courses with either 18 EC or 48 EC in restricted-choice electives.

Continue your studies with a Master's degree

The 60 EC minor in combination with a Bachelor’s in Econometrics, Mathematics, Physics, Informatics and Computer Sciences or an equivalent quantitative Bachelor's programme, gives you direct access to the Master’s programme Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance.

Entry requirements

You can apply for the minor if:

  • You have obtained at least 60 ECTS from university-level courses at the time of application.
  • You have sufficient background in statistics and mathematics. The minor is intended for Bachelor students from a research or technical university studying in a quantitative field (e.g. Econometrics, Mathematics, Physics, Information Science).
  • The 30 EC minor is not open to students of UvA Economics and Business. The 60 EC minor is open for students of UvA Economics and Business.
  • No prior knowledge in Economics is required.

When applying, please submit:

  • a signed and stamped extract of your study results (for non-UvA students); 
  • a list of marks (for UvA students).  

Application and Admission

The application period for a minor in the 2025-2026 academic year is from 1 April to 13 May 2025. There is no limit on the number of places for this minor, but selection will be based on your study background.
