Curious about how to apply for your minor at the University of Amsterdam? Below you'll find a step-by-step guide explaining all the steps you need to take.
Application steps
  • 1. Choose a minor

A minor explores a theme in more detail. This allows you to focus on and gain new knowledge about a new discipline or explore a particular professional field. Also, some minors give access to particular Master's degrees. See the list of all minors.

Tip! You should also consider a second or third choice in case the minor has strict entry requirements or a limited number of places. This will increase your chances of being admitted.

If you have already completed courses from a minor and would like to reapply to take the remaining courses, please contact the Education Desk of the faculty offering the minor. On the student website, use the programme filter to select a programme from that faculty to find the correct contact details. Make sure you arrange your re-enrolment in time (see Step 6).

  • 2. Check the entry requirements and application procedure

For each minor, you will find information on the entry requirements, the number of places, which documents you need to submit and a link to the Course Catalogue for more information on the courses.

You can apply for a UvA minor for the first semester between 1 April, 10:00 and 6 May, 17:00. Submit your application via the application form. To apply, you need an active UvA account (see Step 4).

Note: a different application period and procedure applies to the Education minor.

  • 3. Check whether approval from the Examinations Board is required to include the minor on your degree certificate (UvA students)

Not every minor can be included on your degree certificate. For example, overlap between the minor of your choice and your own Bachelor's degree is usually not allowed. Find your Bachelor’s degree in the approval matrix to see which minors you are allowed to include on your degree certificate, which you are not and for which minors you need to submit a request to your Examinations Board.

Please note: The permission matrix for next academic year’s minors will be published on 1 April.

Looking for information about the permission matrix for the 2025-2026 academic year? You can consult it here.

  • 4. Register in Studielink
  • 5. Apply for the minor between 1 April and 6 May

You can apply for a UvA minor for the first semester between 1 April, 10:00 and 6 May, 17:00. Submit your application via the application form. To apply, you need an active UvA account (see Step 4).

    • In your application, you can specify three preferences. Before you are placed, we will check your application for entry requirements. You will be placed in no more than one minor. Tip: if you want to be sure of placement, include a minor with unlimited places and no entry requirements in your preferences.
    • Are you choosing a minor that has a limited number of places? In that case, a draw or selection procedure will take place. The time of your application – provided you submit it between 1 April and 6 May – does not affect your chance of placement.  So there is no first come first serve!
    • If you have already completed courses from a minor and would like to reapply to take the remaining courses, please contact the Education Desk of the faculty offering the minor. On the student website, use the programme filter to select a programme from that faculty to find the correct contact details. Make sure you arrange your re-enrolment in time (see Step 6).
    • filter on the student website for the correct contact details.
    • If you want to take two minors at the same time, apply online for one minor and contact the Education Desk of the faculty offering the minor to apply for your second minor. Select a programme from the relevant faculty in the programme filter on the student website for the correct contact details.
    • Make sure you have included all necessary attachments. Only complete applications will be considered.

Note: a different application period and procedure applies to the Education minor.

  • 6. Arrange your re-enrolment

Planning to take a minor in semester 1? Make sure to re-enrol for your Bachelor’s programme.

You can arrange your re-enrolment in Studielink from 11 May until 31 August 2026. Arrange your re-enrolment in Studielink before 8 June to avoid delays to your course registration due to processing time.

Note: this does not apply to applications for minors in the second semester.

  • 7. Register for the courses of the minor

After you are admitted to the minor, you are guaranteed placement in compulsory minor courses and guaranteed placement in sufficient electives. You are only guaranteed placement if you have arranged your re-enrolment in Studielink on time and register for the course during the course registration period. The guarantee does not apply if you try to register for the course during the post-registration period or late course registration period.

After your application

From 28th May, you may receive a message regarding placement/rejection.
