    Associate Professor- catalysis engineering

Van 't Hoff Institute of Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam.

In two new LIFT projects, we will develop graphene based coatings together with Tata Steel-Netherlands and chemical intermediates based on polycyclic aromatics with Reutgers resins:

    New grant!

We have been awarded funding in the European research project CAPITA (Catalytic Processes for Innovative Technology Application) for developing a catalytic reactor for producing Green Methanol using CO2 as feedstock.

Other partners in the consortium include the University of Castilla-La-Mancha (UCLM, Spain), the Technological Educational Institute of Sterea Ellada (TEISE, Greece) and the Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute (CPERI, Greece).

Three companies are involved: Hellenic Petroleum Renewables (HELPE RES, Greece), GRAPHENANO (Spain), and Delft Solid Solutions (Netherlands).

    Research highlights

    A new catalyst for ammoximation:

We have discovered a new catalyst for ammoximation. This catalyst contributes to more sustainable processes for making fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates and for polymer production. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has transferred the patent and all related intellectual property rights on this catalyst to DSM.

Science park new idea prize 2010

I won the UvA Science Park New Ideas Prize contest 2010, together with Gadi, for the finding of 'A new catalyst for making nylons'. This new catalyst and process gives a straightforward route to making nylons that reduces waste and demands less raw material. The catalyst has also been patented by the University of Amsterdam. We are now in contact with possible industrial partners in an effort to turn the discoveryinto a commercial process.

Our work has been featured by the University of Amsterdam in this video:

I am also a managing council member of the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action CM1104 Reducible oxide chemistry, structure and functions.

Antagonistic Catalysis: Creating a Bifunctional and Tunable Acid-Base Catalyst

Using a simple and straightforward approach, we have created a bifunctional surface that combines the advantages of bifunctional enzyme-like catalysis with the ease of separation and robustness of traditional heterogeneous catalysis.

    Renewables to chemicals

We are also working on various routes for converting renewable feed-stocks (glycerol, lactic acid) to chemicals.
