Hi Annerieke and Helma, why did you set up Vier het Leven together?
'When we had both been working for years – we knew each other from our student days – we noticed a lot of loneliness among elderly people around us. That’s how we started: as volunteers, helping lonely elderly people in a positive way. Quite quickly, we saw that older people had a strong desire to get out and do something. That’s why we offer elderly people social and cultural activities through Vier het Leven.'
What do you aim to achieve with Vier het Leven and how do you do that?
'We want to give vulnerable elderly people the chance to take part in social and cultural activities. This keeps them connected to society and helps them feel less lonely. Culture is inspiring, they meet others, and they have something to look forward to again.'
'To make cultural activities as accessible as possible for the elderly, our volunteers transport them to the activity in their own vehicles and accompany them throughout the entire outing. We also arrange everything for them: they’re welcomed with a drink, and a table is reserved for them. In this way, we try to lower the barrier as much as possible for them to go out.'
What are you most proud of?
'Mostly, we’re proud of our 1,800 volunteers, staff, and other supporters who help us financially. And we’re proud to have reached so many elderly people already. This year alone, there have been around 34,000 participants. Additionally, we’re also proud of the digital platform we set up, which allows people who can’t go out to still connect with others online and enjoy cultural activities.'
Having confidence in your own ideas is very important.
What advice would you give other UvA alumni who want to pursue a meaningful career?
'To focus on doing something driven by your personal passion. Pursue what you feel strongly about and where you see an opportunity to create value. Start small. Having confidence in your own ideas is very important. For instance, we were initially turned down for our first two grant applications, but we were so convinced of this project that we persisted. So, keep going, even when facing setbacks.'
And what tip do you have for current UvA students?
'When you’re studying, it may seem quite routine. But as you grow older, you start to realise the value of having the opportunity to study. Even if you don’t know exactly what you’ll do with it now, it’s good to understand that what you learn during your studies will stay with you for the rest of your life.'
