The digital revolution in healthcare and the unprecedented successes in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are paving the way in healthcare towards new opportunities to make predictions in diagnosis, prognosis and prevention. All the ingredients for successful solutions are present within the UvA's Informatics Institute, where influential research is being done on machine learning, information retrieval, computer vision, computational science, data engineering and data exchange. Sánchez Gutiérrez specialises in the development of automated solutions for medical image interpretation.
As Professor of AI and Health, Sánchez Gutiérrez will be focusing on the development and clinical implementation of socially responsible AI innovations in healthcare. To this end she will be building an interfaculty multidisciplinary research group, which will bridge the gap between the Faculty of Science and Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) and collaborate closely with such parties as the Netherlands Cancer Institute and industrial partners. The aim will be to develop, validate and put into clinical use socially responsible AI solutions so as to become an indispensable part of the Amsterdam ecosystem in the field of AI and healthcare.
Sánchez Gutiérrez will be lecturing in the fields of AI, Computer Science and Information Studies within UvA's College of Science and the Graduate School of Informatics. She will also be developing course modules in AI and healthcare as well as setting up a teaching programme in health informatics.
Sánchez Gutiérrez has been working as associate professor in the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Radboud University Medical Center (RadboudUMC in Nijmegen) since 2017. Since 2019 she has also been Scientific Director of the Thira Lab, a collaboration between Thirona, Delft Imaging Systems and RadboudUMC. She studied and received her doctoral degree in telecommunications engineering at the University of Valladolid (Spain).
Sánchez Gutiérrez is a member of the editorial board of scientific journal Medical Image Analysis and a member of the editorial team of Biomedical Optics and Medical Imaging published by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Radiology, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Ophthalmology, Nature Scientific Reports, International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Biomedical Optics Express and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
