Bram Vannieuwenhuyze became acquainted with historical maps during his PhD research into the spatial development of the medieval city of Brussels. He hereby developed a method for digital map analysis before going on to focus on the study of historical urban cartography. In this regard, he is closely involved in an academic research project on the urban plans of the Dutch cartographer Jacob van Deventer (1500-1575) and a public-oriented heritage project about Marcus Gerards’ (1521-1590) map of Bruges.
In his role as professor by special appointment, Vannieuwenhuyze will focus on teaching and research in the field of historical cartography. Besides making use of his own research expertise on early modern urban plans, he will also delve into other aspects of historical cartography and the types of historical maps.
Vannieuwenhuyze studied history at Ghent University, where he obtained his doctorate in 2008. He has worked as a doctoral assistant (a post-doctoral position) in Ghent and Leuven, and is currently a freelance historian in academic projects that mostly deal with historical cartography and urban history.
