Gino Kerkhoffs studies the development and evaluation of diagnostic and surgical methods for the treatment of joint diseases of the lowest extremity (of the legs), and arthroscopic procedures in particular. His work spans fundamental biological, functional anatomical and biomechanical research as well as clinical trials and the development of national and international guidelines. In the next few years, Kerkhoffs will be focusing on sports traumatology, and especially on ankle and muscle injuries and stress fractures.
Working with a team of sports physicians, human movement scientists, radiologists and physical therapists, Kerkhoffs aims to develop a centre of expertise for the advancement of care for injured athletes, from amateurs to professionals. Key features will include integrated diagnostics, customised treatment and monitoring of treatment results.
Kerkhoffs has worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at the AMC-UvA since 2008, and prior to that at the Canton of St. Gallen Hospital in Switzerland. Kerkhoffs is an active member of various professional associations in the Netherlands and abroad, and is currently the vice-chair of the Dutch Arthroscopy Society. He is also the scientific chair of the biennial ESSKA Congress (European Society for Sports traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy) and an honorary member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Kerkhoffs has been awarded various research grants, including by the ESSKA, the Arbeidsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen and the Technology Foundation STW. He has published more than one hundred articles in leading professional journals such as The Lancet, The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, British Journal of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. Later this year Springer will be publishing his books Acute Muscle Injuries and The Ankle in Football.
