Besides international legal theory, Jean d'Aspremont's areas of research include most major subjects of general public international law and, in particular, questions pertaining to the law of international organisations, statehood, sources of international law, state responsibility, international dispute settlement and international humanitarian law. He published extensively in all these areas and also holds the Chair of Public International Law at the University of Manchester. He acted as counsel in proceedings before the International Court of Justice. 

Jean d'Aspremont is a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). His recent publications in International Legal Theory include the monograph Formalism and the Sources of International Law: A Theory of the Ascertainment of Legal Rules (Oxford University Press, 2011). He also co-edited the volume entitled International Legal Positivism in a Post-Modern World (Cambridge University Press, 2014) and is the former chief editor of the Leiden Journal of International Law, which is a leading publication in the field of International Legal Theory. 

Before joining the University of Amsterdam in 2009, d'Aspremont was lecturer at Leiden University as well as global research fellow at New York University. He graduated from the University of Cambridge and the University of Louvain.
