Prof. A.J.P.M. Smout has been named professor of Neurogastroenterology and Motility at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty Of Medicine (AMC-UvA).
Prof. A.J.P.M. Smout (1950) has been named professor of Neurogastroenterology and Motility at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty Of Medicine (AMC-UvA).
André Smout is a gastroenterologist and has a specific interest in gastrointestinal motility disorders. His field of work also includes frequently occurring disorders characterised by increased pain sensitivity of the digestive tract, such as irritable bowel syndrome. His doctoral research related to the myoelectrical activity of the stomach. Since that time the specialisation now called Neurogastroenterology and Motility has become the focus of Smout's scientific work. In the coming years his research will focus primarily on gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. In terms of patient care, too, Smout's work will focus on motility disorders. In addition to doing research and providing patient care, he considers teaching students, doctors and others in the Netherlands and abroad an important part of his work.
Smout has been professor of Pathophysiology of gastrointestinal motility disorders at the Utrecht University since 1994. He was previously university lecturer at the UMC Utrecht Gastroenterology Department. Smout is a board member of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility and chairman of the Gastroenterology and Motility section of the Dutch Association of Gastroenterologists. He received a Masters Award in Gastroenterology from the American Gastroenterological Association in 2005. He has published over three hundred articles in various international scientific journals and has written books on gastrointestinal motility and related disorders.
