Jolanda van der Ree-Kossakowski - Alumna Research Master Psychology
  • Jolanda van der Ree-Kossakowski
  • Age: 34
  • Education: Bachelor's in Psychology (Major in Psychological Research Methods)

Why did you choose this Master’s track?

During the Bachelor programme (Psychology at the UvA) I discovered that I enjoyed conducting research and learning more about methods and statistics. This led me to decide to apply for the Research Master programme

Why at the UvA?

I was already studying Psychology at the UvA and I had a great time in Amsterdam. It made complete sense to apply for the Research Master Programme here. I never really considered the option of attending a Master’s programme at a different university.

What is the most important thing that you learned during the Research Master's?

I learned so many things, it is hard to choose! I learned the most of doing research, thereby developing a critical stance. In all the jobs I had so far I needed to be critical towards the research that was already done and work that needs to be done.

What advice would you give yourself if you were still doing the Research Master's?

I would advise myself to enjoy everything a bit more. I was so focused on graduating and getting high grades that I hardly stopped to relax, enjoy a beer or hang out with friends. Looking back, I wished I joined some sort of student association, that can really lift your life and experience as a student!

Do you have any other tips for students that are thinking to start this Master's?

Always apply, the worst thing that can happen is that they say no. The research Master is perfect if you enjoy writing your Bachelor's thesis and conducting research. Even if you are not that interested, the research Master is a great education because it is a two-year Master's. You get to attend more courses and learn more about the topics you are interested in. Plus, it looks great on your CV!
