On this page you will find an explanation for each track-specific requirement, an answer to the question as to which previous education you satisfy, and which subjects you can take if you do not yet meet this requirement.

In order to apply for the Master's track Health Promotion & Behaviour Change, you should meet the following track-specific requirements in addition to the basic requirements:

  • ≥4 EC basic knowledge of Clinical Psychology on bachelor ≥level 1
  • ≥4 EC basic knowledge of Biological Psychology on bachelor ≥level 1
  • ≥4 EC basic knowledge of Social Psychology on bachelor ≥level 1
  • ≥4 EC Advanced knowledge of Health Psychology on bachelor level 2/3
  • ≥8 EC Advanced knowledge of any field of Psychology on bachelor level 2/3

The levels refer to UvA bachelor years:

  • Level 1: comparable to UvA bachelor year 1, basic, introductory courses in the field.
  • Level 2: comparable to UvA bachelor year 2, comprehensive, intermediate courses.
  • Level 3: comparable to UvA bachelor year 3, advanced, more specialized courses.

Level 3 of the UvA bachelor refers to level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework

  • ≥4 EC basic knowledge of Health, Clinical, Biological or and Social Psychology (12 EC in total)

    Students should have basic knowledge about Clinical, Biological, and Social Psychology, for at least 4 EC per subfield, at least at level 1 (comparable to UvA bachelor year 1, basic, introductory courses).

    Regarding Clinical Psychology (≥4 EC): we expect that you have basic knowledge (at least first year level) in the field of psychopathology (DSM), diagnostics and treatment.

    Regarding Biological Psychology (≥4 EC): we expect you to have basic knowledge (at least first year level) of the links between physiological aspects of psychological states, such as neural, endocrine and immune function. This includes knowledge on brain anatomy, perception, motor skills, attention, executive functions, motivation, emotion, learning, memory, and consciousness. Other common names for this field within psychology are Psychophysiology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Psychobiology, or Cognitive Neuroscience.

    Regarding Social Psychology (≥4 EC): we expect you to have basic knowledge (at least first year level) about social perception, stereotyping and prejudice, self-perception and self-regulation, social specialization, group processes, attitudes and attitude change, normative influence, close relationships, aggression and prosocial behaviour.

    If you have successfully completed, or will complete one of the bachelor’s programmes stated below before 31 August, you will meet this track-specific requirement:

    • Bachelor in Psychology at any university in The Netherlands
    • The “UvA Kwalificatieprogramma” within the bachelor of Applied Psychology at Hogeschool van Amsterdam, with specialization B&C; please note: if you have successfully completed, or will complete the “UvA Kwalificatieprogramma” within the bachelor of Applied Psychology at Hogeschool van Amsterdam, but haven’t chosen B&C, you will only need to do the first year course Neuropsychology (6 EC) to meet this requirement.
    • UvA Bachelor Interdisciplinary Social Sciences with a minor in Psychology Health Promotion & Behaviour Change.

    If you have a different prior education, please show in your application how you meet this requirement. You can do this by referring to one or more courses that you have obtained in the area of this requirement and by enclosing the course catalogue description of these subjects with your application.

  • What if you do not meet thesis track-specific requirements?

    If you do not meet this requirement with your prior education, it is possible to do one or more courses of 6 EC (depending on the size of your deficiency).

    For the sake of clarity:

    • By passing Clinical Psychology you meet the part of this requirement about clinical psychology.
    • By passing Brain & Cognition or Neuropsychology you meet the part of this requirement about biological psychology. 
    • By passing the course in Social Psychology you meet the part of this requirement about social psychology.
    • Please note: we offer the courses in Clinical Psychology, Brain & Cognition, Neuropsychology, and Social Psychology in combination with another course, but for students who only want to do one part of it, it is possible to follow these parts separately.
  • ≥812 EC Advanced knowledge of any field of Psychology on bachelor level 2/3

    We expect you to have at leas 8 EC knowledge at 2nd/3rd year level (level 2/3: comparable to UvA bachelor year 2/3, advanced, more specialised courses) in one or more areas of Psychology, regardless in which subarea(s).

    Please note: this is excluding courses used to fulfil other requirements (basic or track-specific)

    If you have successfully completed, or will complete one of the bachelor’s programmes stated below before 31 August, you will meet this track-specific requirement:

    • Bachelor in Psychology at any university in The Netherlands
    • The “UvA Kwalificatieprogramma” within the bachelor of Applied Psychology at Hogeschool van Amsterdam
    • UvA Bachelor Interdisciplinary Social Sciences with a minor in Psychology
    • UvA bachelor PPLE with a major in Psychology
    • UvA bachelor Bèta Gamma with a major in Brain & Cognition or Psychological Methods
    • UvA bachelor Psychobiologie

    If you have a different previous education, please show in your application how you meet this requirement. You can do this by referring to one or more courses that you have obtained in the area of this requirement and by enclosing the course catalogue description of these courses with your application.

    What if you do not meet this track-specific requirement?

    If you do not meet this requirement with your prior education, it is possible to do these courses at 2nd/3rd year level with us (depending on the size of your deficiency).

    For instance, one or two of the following courses would be a good choice, particularly when you only have 1st year level social psychology or clinical knowledge:

  • Statement of Motivation

    In addition to the academic requirements, the selection committee assesses the relevance and quality of your motivation statement. Applications may get rejected if the motivation does not sufficiently match the content of the programme. The motivation statement consists of answers to specific questions regarding the programme.

    In MyInfo, our online application system, you will be asked to upload certain documents, including your academic transcripts, grading scheme, copies of your academic diplomas, cv, copy of your passport, English language proficiency test score and course descriptions from the course catalogue provided by your university. 

  • Proof of Qualification

    In order to demonstrate your knowledge of the basic and track-specific requirements, you need to fill out and upload your proofs of qualification (PoQ) for both the basic and the track-specific requirements. Refer to section 2: Entry requirements and list your corresponding courses in the PoQ templates.
