Students should have an advanced understanding (level 3: comparable to UvA bachelor year 3, advanced, more specialised courses) of the most important facets of perception, learning, memory and consciousness and the most important theoretical approaches to, core concepts in and empirical findings in these subjects.

Students should have knowledge about the most important facets and the most important theoretical approaches to, core concepts in and empirical findings in these other, different, cognitive domains.

Students should possess the advanced knowledge and practical skills (level 2/3: comparable to UvA bachelor year 2/3, advanced, more specialised courses) necessary to do research in the field of Brain and Cognition, especially with regard to widely used behavioural research paradigms in B&C. They should be familiar with neuroscientific and psychophysiological methods (EEG, TMS, fMRI, skin conductance, reaction time experiments, etc.). Also, students should understand the potential and limitations of the different research methods.

Students should have knowledge regarding neuroanatomy, neural transmission and system-level neuroscience. They should possess knowledge about the molecular, cellular and systems-level mechanisms underlying behaviour and the most common research techniques used to study brain function at these different levels of analysis. Also, they should have an understanding of how higher level phenomena emerge from lower level ones.
