The two-year Master's programme Mathematics focuses on questions from all major branches of advanced modern mathematics, pure as well as applied. It allows you to specialise in the area of your interest, while broadening your knowledge in general. Specifically, you choose one of the four specialisations, each offering a large number of courses.
The study programme consists of courses from your specialisation (Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Dynamical Systems, Discrete Mathematics and Quantum Information or Stochastics), the Master Seminar, elective courses and your Master’s project.
The entry requirements and the application procedure for this Master’s programme depends on whether you have completed your prior education in the Netherlands or abroad.
The Master's programme Mathematics is only offered as a full-time programme. Due to the nature of the study programme, it isn’t possible to study in part-time.
The application process and the deadline depend on whether you have completed your prior education in the Netherlands or abroad. We strongly recommend to start the application procedure at least a week before the deadline. Getting all your documents ready and going through the process will take several days.
Unique at UvA is the challenging 150 EC double Master’s degree programme in Econometrics and Mathematics that enables you to obtain the degrees in both fields in two and a half years.
As a student in the double degree programme, you will follow the essential courses from both programmes. However you only conduct one interdisciplinary Master's project with supervisors from both disciplines, resulting in one integrated Master's thesis. You can only follow a double degree programme if you meet the admission criteria for both programmes separately.
The double Master's degree programme in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the UvA gives you the opportunity to study both fields and to search for answers to deeply fundamental questions. It is a high-level, exciting programme. It focuses on the theoretical aspects of mathematics and physics, and their interaction. The study load is 180 EC. This enables you to obtain the degrees in both fields in three years
Completing this study programme will put you in the unique position to be able to communicate high-level research between these areas.
For programme-related questions, please contact the Master Coordinator, Mingmin Shen.
Note: as explained under "Application and Admission'' the Master Coordinator cannot provide you with individual pre-registration advice! Please base your decision to apply on that section only.
