To apply for this Master’s programme you will need to register in Studielink AND apply for the programme at the Faculty of Science through DataNose before the mentioned dates, even if you have not completed your Bachelor’s programme yet.

Start your application procedure on time

Registrations in Studielink and DataNose and getting all documents ready will take several days. Therefore, we strongly recommend to start the application procedure at least a week before the deadline.

All students holding an academic Bachelor's degree can apply for the programme (see overview below for examples). Admissibility depends on the composition of the programmes and the type of courses, academic level, motivation and grade point average. Candidates for the programme should show an interest in both social and natural sciences and should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in mathematics and computing skills.

These requirements have to be demonstrated by grade transcripts including: 

• Programming (minimum of 10 EC) 

• Calculus, linear algebra, probability theory and / or statistics (minimum of 10 EC). 

• Courses in social and/or behavioral sciences (minimum of 10 EC)  

This Master’s programme is particularly relevant for students who have completed one of the following programmes:  

• BSc Computational Social Science (UvA) 

• BSc Bèta-gamma (UvA) 

• BSc Future Planet Studies (UvA) 

• BSc Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (UvA) 

• BSc Psychobiologie (UvA)

• Bsc Biomedische wetenschappen

• BSc Science, Business and Innovation (VU) 

• BSc Technische Bestuurskunde (TU Delft) 

• BSc Economics and Mathematics (track: Mathematics, Economics and Policy) (UU) 

• University College or Liberal Arts & Sciences (any university)

We will also consider students that (slightly) deviate from the requirements as formulated above. We emphasize motivation in all such admissions and require a statement on motivation as a part of the admissions procedure. 

Because this new programme is awaiting final administrative procedures, official registration is not yet possible. You are however able to pre-register for the programme which means the admissions board will take a look at your admissions file and give you preliminary advice on whether you meet the entry requirements and are eligible for this programme.  

You can pre-register through the form below to receive preliminary advice on your eligibility. The form will be open until official registration is possible. Once you submit your pre-registration you can expect an answer within four weeks. Please note you will still need to officially register and re-submit your documents once this is possible.

Submit this pre-registration form and send the required files below (Word or PDF format) to csp-iis-science@uva.nl. Use ‘pre-registration’ and your full name as the email subject. Ensure your documents are sized appropriately to avoid delivery issues.

• Course list including grade transcript from relevant and (to be) completed Bachelor's or Master's degrees. Please note: when officially registering in Studielink and our system Datanose, this must be an official and signed document.
• Course descriptions for different entry requirements. Add a description of the courses mentioned in question 7, 8 and 9 in the form from the study guide of your programme. Include links to the study guide texts.
• Motivation letter (max 1 page)
• Resume (max 2 pages)

After your pre-registration, you will need to submit an enrolment application in Studielink. However, as of yet, this isn't possible. You will be updated once enrolment in Studielink is available. Studielink is the national online system for students who would like to pursue a degree programme at a Dutch university.

Check your DigiD (before starting in Studielink)

A DigiD (Digital Identification) is an online ID that provides access to government administration websites.

• Students who do not live in the Netherlands can use Studielink without a DigiD.
• Students who currently live in the Netherlands will need their DigiD to use Studielink. We strongly recommend you to apply for your DigiD at least three weeks before registering in Studielink.

Important! While selecting the Master’s programme of your interest in Studielink, make sure to select the regular programme (option 1). Do not select option 2 (after a temporary termination of enrolment) or option 3 (elective) if you are a degree seeking student. Note that the track of your interest can be selected later on in DataNose.

Within 48 hours after submitting your enrolment application in Studielink, you will receive an email with your UvAnetID and an email with instructions for the next step of the application process. You need your UvAnetID to continue with your application. Follow the instructions in the email to activate your UvAnetID as you will need it to complete your UvA application.

Only after activating your UvAnetID, you can submit your UvA online application via DataNose.

Please make sure to upload the required documents in PDF format. Applicants who (will) hold more than one academic degree must merge copies of both (or more) academic transcripts into one PDF.

In DataNose we expect you to upload the following documents:

1. A self-written motivation letter in English (max. 500 words, strong advise: do not use AI tools to write your letter for you)
2. Your Curriculum Vitae in English
3. A copy of your Bachelor’s degree certificate (in case you are planning to finish your Bachelor after the application you are asked to upload a certified copy once you have finished your Bachelor)
4. An official list with all courses followed and grades/marks obtained 
5. An abstract of your bachelorthesis/project (max. 200 words)
6. Reference letter(s)

As soon as you have submitted the (sufficiently) complete online form in DataNose, your application file will be acknowledged. It differs per programme how long it takes before you are informed via email about the decision on admission. However it will not take longer than 6 weeks. An admission will always be conditional as we must still verify your documents (consult step 8).  You can track the status of your admission using the checklist in DataNose

Based on the contents of your application file you hear whether you are:

1. Directly eligible: you receive an admission letter with instructions for further processing of your admission.
2. Invited for an assessment interview: you receive a letter with the date and time of the assessment interview.
3. Not eligible: you receive a letter with a reason for the rejection.

Please note that in former years, about 40% of the applicants have been admitted to the Master’s programme.

Assessment interview

Applicants may be invited to an assessment interview with the programme manager. This interview is used to determine students' motivation, academic potential and progress and ambition. Applicants can be assessed on behavioural characteristics required for working in the forensic field, such as: analytical skills, communication skills, entrepreneurship, organisational sensitivity and ability to perform under pressure.

If you are conditionally admitted to the Master’s programme you will receive an admissions letter by means of email. In the letter you will find a link to DataNose to accept or decline your place in the programme. This has to be done within two weeks. If you have questions about this, please contact the Education Desk.

A student ID card is a personal card which serves as proof of identity for examinations or borrowing library books. After admission, you will receive instructions on how to request your student ID card. 

In order to complete your enrolment for a degree programme at the UvA you will need to pay the tuition fee.
