Daniel de Vries (Danny) is an associate professor (U.D. I) in the Anthropology of Health. He received his Ph.D. in Human Ecology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (UNC-CH, USA), after obtaining M.A.'s in Cultural Anthropology at UNC-CH and Social & Organizational Psychology (with a cognitive science minor) at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He is part of the programme group Health, Care and the Body at the Department of Anthropology at the UvA and a Research Fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD).
His general professional orientation is as an applied social scientist, oftenen working on the intersection between health and ecology. His theoretical contributions include the notion of temporal vulnerability, a systemic vulnerability enacted through compromised human expectations and traceable through experiences of surprise. He has expertise is in disaster and pandemic preparedness and response, community engagement, flood mitigation, science for policy, human resources for health, antimicrobial resistance and capacity building… always with an eye towards vulnerable populations.
Danny has been leading projects for institutions such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Dutch Aids Fonds, Wellcome Trust, RIVM, UNICEF, EU Joint Research Center, USAID, and FEMA, and joined advisory committees for the WHO and Red Cross. He has been working to integrate social and behavioral science advise into policy making and has a strong interest in reflexive learning. He has been Chair of the Anthropology Program Committee and Director of the Master Medical Anthropology and Sociology.
