I graduated from East China Normal University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and from the University of Amsterdam with a master’s degree in Sociology: Gender, Sexuality, and Society (cum laude).
My previous research dives into the topics of gay barebacking (sex without condoms) and gay BDSM practices (bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism) in urban China.
In my doctoral research, I engage with queer nightlife studies and initiate conversations with queer geography, sexuality study, feminist theory, and anthropology of the good. My fieldwork is based in a gay sex club in Amsterdam. I view this nightclub as a material/sensory space, cultural phenomenon, and theoretical lens. I attempt to understand under what conditions and circumstances gay commerce and sexual liberation activism become entangled in the Dutch context. My ethnographic analysis unfolds the dynamics of how the politics of space, sex, diversity, and love become manifested and contested in and throughout the gay sex club.
