Sophie van Ginneken is a lecturer in Architectural History at the Department of Art History at the University of Amsterdam. She is specialized in the history and theory of the 19th and 20th century city and its architecture. In 2023 she defended her dissertation De toeristische blik op Amsterdam. De stad als sight en site, 1840-2000. This dissertation questions how architecture, as the visual and physical expression of Amsterdam’s identity, has played a pivotal role in the way the city has been perceived and consumed by tourists, and (re)planned for tourist ends.
