I am a functional linguist. My main research interests are linguistic typology, diachronic linguistics and the development of the theory of Functional Discourse Grammar.
My interest for diachronic linguistics goes back to my BA in Foreign Languages and Literatures (University of Florence), when I started working on the grammaticalization of the indicative paradigm from Latin to French and Portuguese. It was during my MA in Linguistics at the University of Lisbon that I realized that my main interest lay in bringing together diacronic and typological research; that is also when I first met Functional Discourse Grammar and decided that in my PhD research (Univesity of Lisbon) I would apply this framework in the study of grammaticalizaton from a typological perspective. Typology and diachrony were also at the core of my postdoctoral fellowship on the grammaticalization and syncretism patterns of voice markers (University of Liège), which I held until I joined the UvA in 2023.
