Amsterdam Business School (ABS) professor Sander Onderstal (Strategy & International Business section) was recently awarded a research grant by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The grant of almost 800,000 euro is part of the NWO's 'Open Competition L' funding instrument for curiosity-driven research.

Projects selected for this funding also have a clear social and/or humanities component.

The research will be conducted together with fellow ABS researcher professor Jan-Willem Stoelhorst (Strategy & International Business section). Their research focuses on the best way to shape economic institutions like markets, legal frameworks, and incentive schemes. Economists tend to address this question assuming the people are selfish. However, do the rules of the game still work for people who care about others, about their social image, and about behaving in line with social norms?  The researchers will develop a new framework in which people have social preferences. They will then test the predictions of the new framework using randomised experiments in the areas of charitable fundraising and cooperation in teams. The project will be completed in 5 years.
