Through BuzzHouse, we aim to offer a platform where they can gain practical experience, thereby contributing to fostering a new generation of media professionals that generate impact.
To me, impact means bridging the gap between academic knowledge and societal needs. This translates to my work as both a film lecturer, researcher and historian at the UvA on the one hand, and a film producer, distributor and programmer for different non-profits on the other hand. In that, I ensure that both my scholarly and creative work contribute to social change. I am committed to ethical, sustainable, and inclusive media production and representation.
BuzzHouse became part of the Humanities Venture Lab (HVL) in April 2023. At HVL, we created the Beehive Studio - a physical space for students to ‘do media’. Since then, we have developed a close relationship with HVL. We often host events at the Lab, including, recently, a test screening and co-creation session of my latest impact film production. HVL is also actively involved in an elective course I teach, Creativity, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation in the Humanities.
The Lab has supported BuzzHouse in many ways. Most importantly, they provided a studio space and event facilities, giving us a physical base to collaborate with students, staff and external partners. However, HVL’s support extends beyond space and programming. The community fosters a collaborative environment that encourages the practical, creative, and entrepreneurial application of humanities research.
Embrace the synergy between theory and practice. In both academia and entrepreneurship, the most significant impact arises from applying ideas to real-world contexts. In any case, always stay true to your values. Remember that your unique perspective can lead to innovative solutions and best practices for various societal challenges.
