The number of students, scientific publications, licences and patents are key areas of interest in this regard. The government also looks at the collaboration sought by the UvA with businesses (and with the government) aimed at applying the acquired knowledge in society.

Besides providing grants, the government also collaborates with the UvA in scientific research. Both national and local governments encourage third-party collaboration with the UvA. In the Amsterdam Economic Board, local government, businesses, the UvA and other knowledge institutions work together to stimulate the knowledge economy in the Amsterdam area.
