In 2021 I graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a master's degree in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Before my master’s, I did a Bachelor in Biomedical Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit (V) in Amsterdam. During both of my degrees, I explored various aspects of Biomedical Sciences and Neurosciences in internships and through various courses.
The master Brain and Cognitive Sciences particularly appealed to me because of the extensive time available for internships and the interdisciplinary and flexible curriculum. For example, while studying Brain and Cognitive Sciences, I also followed courses at the Neurosciences master at the VU to broaden my knowledge of molecular and clinical neuroscience. As part of the Brain and Cognitive Sciences programme, I moved to London for my final internship in the lab of Sonja Hofer at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre. During this internship, I had the chance to work on my own project and study part of the neural circuitry involved in visually evoked freezing and escape behaviours. At the end of my internship, I was invited to continue to work on the project as a PhD student.
To new and current students at the UvA, I would advise you to ask all your questions and explore areas that you are interested in. Look beyond the scope of your current degree for instance by taking extracurricular courses, and follow your interests and curiosity. So, approach lecturers, ask about opportunities and meet interesting people. Try to become an active member of the university community for instance by joining a study association or education committee. Lastly, it is important to find mentors and get support in order to thrive and enjoy your time and career in academia, and beyond. Also, don't hesitate to reach out!
