Thanks to our ‘in context’ teaching method, you can easily adapt to various kinds of legal practice and fulfill a range of functions.
Our graduates work:
- In International Criminal Courts and Tribunals, including the International Criminal Court (ICC)

- In academic institutions and NGO’s
- In International Criminal Law academia
- At ministries of foreign affairs, justice and defence
You can also choose to pursue an academic career at the university after completing your Master's degree. As a PhD student, you will conduct research and give lectures.

What will my career prospects be like?
This LLM programme prepares students for a career in international criminal law. Graduates are singularly qualified to assume leadership roles in the world of international criminal courts and tribunals including the ICC, in national legal institutions and at law firms, in international criminal law academia and at ministries of foreign affairs, justice and defence. Due to their prominent position in the area of international (criminal) law, New York and Amsterdam offer enhanced job opportunities for graduates of the programme.

Can I gain admission to the bar and acquire ‘civiel effect’?
Obtaining ‘civiel effect’ in the Netherlands requires both the degrees of Bachelor and Master of Laws completed at a Dutch university (cf. art. 2 Advocatenwet), as well as meeting the requirements of the "Convenant Civiel Effect" of 2016. Please note that the Bachelor’s in Law, and some Law programmes at the Master's level, are taught solely in Dutch.
If you obtained your Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in law in another European country (EER or Switzerland), you may be eligible for exemption from some courses within the UvA's Bachelor’s in Law.
