This course is a diverse exploration of creative writing as a discipline and an art form. As members of a literary community, students will immerse themselves in both the theory and practice of writing poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction.
The course culminates in a final creative writing project and practice in a writing “workshop” in which students discuss and constructively critique their works-in-progress.
At the same time, the capabilities of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) threaten to disrupt creative writing—some say existentially—and it is essential that writers be literate in how generative AI and LLMs work and what they can and can’t (yet) do. This course will concurrently explore what gen AI might mean for creative writing, making use of not only its practical tools but also the mirror with which to explore important questions of the nature of creativity, beauty, and learning.
