Curating Art and Cultures prepares you for a career in a museum or in any other cultural institution that demands curatorial knowledge and advanced academic research skills; or for an academic career or other (art historical) professions that require strengths in writing, presentation, and research.

The job market

As a graduate of the programme, you will have developed the theoretical expertise and obtained the preliminary work experience necessary for a curatorial or research career at museums of art, ethnography, design and history, galleries and exhibition spaces or any other cultural institution which focuses on research and presentation of objects and cultures.

Previous graduates have gone on to curatorial or research positions at, among others:

  • Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam
  • Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
  • Huygens ING
  • Museum of World Cultures, Amsterdam/Leiden
  • Mauritshuis, The Hague
  • Kunstmuseum Den Haag, The Hague
  • RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History, The Hague
  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam
  • Teylers Museum, Haarlem
  • National Gallery, Washington, D.C.

  • University of Amsterdam
  • Catholic University of Louvain
  • Università degli Studi Firenze
  • Uffizi Museum, Florence
  • Galleria Borghese, Rome

Laying a solid foundation for doing research, the programme also prepares for the PhD positions that are necessary to qualify for a further academic career. It is also suited for those who envision an independent career as freelance curator, researcher, journalist, writer or cultural entrepreneur.

An academic career

Graduates interested in pursuing an academic career have gone on to do research internships or to pursue a PhD. If you are interested in pursuing an academic career, you can explore the possibility of a corresponding two-year Research Master's with the programme coordinator.
