Mies Westerveld is emeritus-hoogleraar Sociaal verzekeringsrecht en emeritus-hoogleraar Sociale rechtshulp.

De start en het eind van haar werkzame leven is gelegen bij dit laatste thema, de sociale rechtshulp en breder de toegang tot het recht.

Tijdens haar studie Rechten (1972-1977) was zij actief als rechtswinkelier, daarna werkte ze ruim tien jaar als sociaal advocaat. 

In 1988 verruilde ze de rechtspraktijk voor de wetenschap. Ze ging werken aan de Universiteit Utrecht waar ze in 1988 promoveerde op een rechtsvergelijkende studie naar oudedagsvoorzieningen in de sociale zekerheid. Eind jaren negentig stapte ze over naar de universiteit Amsterdam waar ze in 2007 werd benoemd als buitengewoon hoogleraar Sociale rechtshulp. Vier jaar later volgde een benoeming als hoogleraar Sociaal Verzekeringsrecht.

Ook was ze van 2003 tot 2011 lid van de Eerste Kamer der Staten-Generaal voor de PvdA en van 2011 tot 2013 voor een dag per week Lector Rechten aan de Hogeschool Utrecht.

Na haar pensioen richt zij haar activiteiten uitsluitend nog op vraagstukken met betrekking tot toegang tot recht. Haar afscheidsrede in 2019 was gewijd aan de toekomst van de toegang tot het recht met daarin een grote rol voor legal tech en artificiele intelligentie.

Mies Westerveld (1953) was Professor Social Security Law and Legal Aid until 2020. Social legal aid has been a constant factor throughout her working life. During her study at Law School (1972-1977) she was active in a law clinic, after her masters she worked as a legal aid lawyer until 1988.

In that year she began an academic career. She specialised in social security law and wrote a doctoral thesis about old age and death pensions in social security. 

In 2007 she became Chair holder by special appointment in Social Legal aid, a chair that was financed by the Legal Aid Board.

Four years later she was apppointed Chair holder  Social security law. 

During this period she also was politically active. From 2003 until 2011 she was a member of the Dutch Senate for the socio-domocratic party.

After her retirement in 2020 she concentrates her research on legal aid and access to justice. She participates frequently in the academic and political debate about actuel themes in this area and in particular the current reform of the legal aid system.

Research interests

Westerveld dedicated her inaugural speech to the history of legal aid in the Netherlands with the arisal of the A2J movement in the early seventies of the past century as starting point.

Her farewell speech was a part reality, part fantasy sketch of the state of art of the justice service system in  2035 with a large role for legal tech and articifial intelligence.
