Eline Westra is a doctoral researcher at the political science department. Her dissertation explores the postcolonial citizenship of Surinamese-Dutch citizens in the Netherlands from the 1970s to the present. In her research, she has focused on the perspectives of Surinamese-Dutch citizens and activist organisations concerning migration- and social policy, and their role in (re)defining what 'nation' and 'family' mean in a postcolonial context.
The research is part of dr. Saskia Bonjour’s VIDI project ‘Strange(r) Families. Political Contestation over Family Migration Rights for Non-Normative Families'. This project analyses how migration law and politics deal with different kinds of families asking to be allowed to live together in Europe.
Eline holds a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Democratization (EMA Venice, Italy) and a Bachelor’s in International Relations (University of Groningen).
