Joëlle Trampert works as an Assistant Professor at the department of International and European Law at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests include the law of State responsibility, especially responsibility for complicity; international human rights law; and international obligations regarding export controls. Joëlle teaches various international law courses at Bachelor and Master level and supervises theses and an Amsterdam International Law Clinic team.
Joëlle successfully defended her PhD dissertation entitled ‘State Responsibility for Complicity in and Other Contributions to International Crimes and Serious Human Rights Violations’ on 9 October 2024. A link to the thesis is included under ‘publications’ below.
Before starting her PhD in September 2018, Joëlle worked at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg, where she undertook comparative legal research for the Court’s ongoing legal terminology projects. After obtaining her Master’s in International and European Law from the UvA in March 2015, she completed internships with the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and several law firms in the Netherlands.
Joëlle’s PhD is part of the NWO-funded project ‘Rethinking Secondary Liability for International Crimes and Serious Human Rights Violations’, which she is still affiliated with. She has also been an active member of the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research.
