Dorien Manting is a professor by special appointment in spatial demography at the Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development Studies of the University of Amsterdam (since 2013) and a senior scientific researcher at the Department of Urbanization and Transport at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) in The Hague (since 2020). From 2008 up to 2020, she was head of the Department of Urbanization and Transport of PBL. The PBL is an autonomous and national research and policy institute in the fields of the environment, nature and spatial planning.
She studied Urban Planning and Demography at the University of Amsterdam in the eighties and she defended her dissertation on marriage and cohabitation at the University of Amsterdam in the nineties.
Education
At the UVA, she participates in a few courses, such as the Bachelor course Migration & Population or the Master course Urban lab and Urban research Master.
Research
Her research area is spatial demography and she specializes in studying demographic and spatial behaviour from a life course perspective. Her current research focuses on residential mobility and housing trajectories of migrant groups. Earlier research focused on the influence of demographic life events on social-spatial behaviour such as car mobility or residential mobility.
She coordinates a research program - together with HvA -, subsidized by the Kenniscentrum Ongelijkheid of the UVA (2022-2023). Beside the UVA and the HvA, the research institute of the municipality of Amsterdam (OenS), the Amsterdam collaboration of housing cooperation’s (AFWC) and PBL contribute to this research program. The focus is on the position employers on the housing market in the Metropolitan area of Amsterdam, with special attention for crucial keyworkers on the housing market.
A UVA/PBL research project focuses on housing trajectories of recently arrived migrants in the Netherlands. Using a life course perspective, studies focus on how life course changes interact with the housing trajectories of migrants, upon arrival and thereafter.
