My main topic is the availabability of plant nutrients such as N and P. My main questions are: how N and P affect plant growth and biodiversity in (semi-)natural ecosystems such as coastal dunes, alkaline peatlands and temperate forests, how N and P availability naturally change over landscape gradients, how they are affected by environmental stress factors such as high atmospheric N-deposition and eutrophication of surface waters, and how nature management can help to improve resilience with respect to nutrient availability and biodiversity.
On BSc-level, I have been teaching courses such as World Ecosystems and Landscapes of the Netherlands, and have been involved in fieldcourses on landscape, soil and vegetation, such as Soils and Environment and Desertification and Land degradation. On MSc-level, I am involved in Integrated Coastal Dune Management, Biogeochemical cycles. On both BSc and MSc levels, I am supervisor of BSc-thesis and MSc-thesis projects.
