Prior to starting my PhD I could gain research experience as a Project Researcher at the AMIREG (African Migration Root Causes and Regulatory Dynamics) and WAMIG (Political Economy of West African Migration Governance) research projects. Both consider the influence of European stakeholders on the formulation of West African migration policies. Before that I hold the roles of Communication Assitant and Officer at the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE). I have a MA in Migration Studies from the University of Sussex and a BA in International Relations and Organizations from the University of Groningen.
My research considers migrant smuggling governance as ‘borderwork’ (Rumford, 2006), denoting it as a space where diverging logics and rationalities meet, including local informal and formal, national government and external political rationalities (Côté-Boucher et al., 2014). Adopting a multi-scalar lens (Hameiri and Jones, 2017; Laine, 2016)I consider both European funded projects against migrant smuggling and Senegalese initiatives in the field. I focus on their re/negotiation by institutional actors directly involved in these policies and communities affected by them.
