In democratic societies, Public Service Media differ from other media in their distinctive democratic function of creating a shared public space. Yet, there are present issues that put pressure on the extent to which Public Service Media can achieve this function and hence undermine its democratic importance. Bias accusations towards Public Service Media and mainstream news outlets are abundant in both Europe and the US are part of larger trends relating to questions of the erosion of trust in democratic institutions, such as the media. The Netherlands is no exception, with heated debates on the apparent bias of public service broadcaster NOS. In my research I try to understand why some citizens perceive news from public media such as the NOS as biased. Here I look at bias accusations in public debates, news content, and individual perceptions of bias conjointly.
