Gustavo Becker is a Doctoral Researcher at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (previously Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law). He is pursuing a joint PhD from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Luxembourg, under the supervision of Prof. Ingo Venzke and Prof. Hélène Ruiz Fabri. His research explores the relationship between the use of private dispute resolution mechanisms and the realization of the right to remedy in cases involving transnational business-related human rights abuses.
Gustavo holds a diverse academic background, with degrees from both Dutch and Brazilian institutions. He earned an LLM in Globalisation and Law with a specialization in Human Rights (with honours) from Maastricht University, where he was awarded the UM Holland-High Potential Scholarship. Additionally, he holds a Master's (MSc) in Law and Sustainability (summa cum laude) and a Bachelor's in Law (cum laude) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) with academic exchange periods in Melbourne and Milan. In 2019, he was awarded a full scholarship by the curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law to attend its summer school on Private International Law.
Prior to his PhD, he worked at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the UNCITRAL Secretariat (United Nations), the Center for Arbitration and Mediation of the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Canada, and Skadden Arps LLP. He also held a position as a research and teaching assistant at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, and has presented his academic work at various institutions across Europe, South America and the USA.
