Julia Bader is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. She joined the Department of Political Science and the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research in July 2012. Before joining UvA, she worked as a research fellow at the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in Bonn (Germany) for five years. Julia holds a MA in Politics and Management from Konstanz University and a PhD in Political Science from Heidelberg University.
She is a member of the Research Network External Democacy Promotion and has participated in the International Diffusion and Cooperation of Authoritarian Regimes - IDCAR-Network and the project Undermining Hegemony. The US, China, Russia, and International Public Goods.
Julia is the author of the monograph China's Foreign Relations and the Survival of Autocracies which has been pulished with Routledge. Her work has appeared in academic journals such as International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of Political Research, Journal of Peace Research, Foreign Policy Analysis, Democratization, International Studies Review, Contemporary Politics, and in several collective book projects. Her research has been featured in The Economist and in the South China Morning Post. She has been interviewed for the VPRO's Tegenlicht Future Shock Podcast (in Dutch).
Julia's research focuses on China´s foreign relations; regime transition and autocratic stability, international relations and foreign policy, development assistance and human rights.
Julia's teaching includes various seminars on China's foreign policy and China's rise in international relations at the bachelor's and master's level, the supervision of students in writing their master's thesis, and the first-year bachelor's lecture course Introduction to Political Science Research.
