Anthi Argyriou is a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis). The working title of her research project is Mediterranean Drifts: The Aesthetics and Politics of Contemporary Art in Greece in the Context of the 'Refugee Crisis'. It will focus on how artistic practices, exhibitions and cultural institutions have dealt with issues of migration in Greece from 2015 to 2018. In an attempt to respond to images and experiences of the 'refugee crisis' and their implications, individual artists, museums and cultural initiatives have renegotiated the concepts of dislocation, hospitality and agency in the framework of globalized (forced) displacement and socio-political upheaval. Her project will unfold these aesthetic and theoretical shifts by analyzing specific case studies and employing current concepts from cultural analysis, globalization and migration studies. In addition, she will study audiences' reception of and involvement in the analyzed practices, exhibitions and institutional strategies in order to delineate the social and cultural impact of contemporary art in this context. Anthi Argyriou has participated in organizing and curating exhibitions in museums and art galleries, as well as in planning and coordinating educational programs and conferences. She is particularly interested in interdisciplinary artistic projects engaging with social, political and theoretical discourses and her essays focus on the intersections of contemporary art, philosophy and political sciences. She has been a member of the team of ‘Action Field Kodra’ international visual arts festival in Thessaloniki since 2011, while as of 2014 she is one of the main curators and coordinators of the festival. She has studied Archaeology and Art History in Aristotle University (Thessaloniki, Greece) and holds a Master of Arts in Cultural Analysis (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam. She is currently funded by the NEON Organization for Culture and Development for her doctoral studies.
