What to expect from the immigration process if you have a nationality other from the ones mentioned below?
You’ll need a residence permit (VVR) as well as an entry visa (MVV)
Is your nationality from another country than Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, Monaco, Vatican City, USA, or South Korea, and are you not in possession of a valid Schengen residence permit? Then you'll need to apply for an MVV entry visa and a VVR residence permit. Please read the steps carefully to know what you need to do, what you can expect and when.
Step-by-step timeline for MVV entry visa and VVR residence permit
First, you'll receive an invitation to the immigration process in your student email account. You can check which conditions you must meet to receive an invitation and when you should receive it on the Need to know page.
Gather all the required documents and upload them to your application in the Myinfo system before the deadline. Please make sure to give yourself enough time. To fill out any applicable documents correctly. This will ensure you'll receive your permit as quickly as possible. You can find all the documents you need on the required documents page.
Now, the UvA Immigration team will review the documents you uploaded. If further documentation is required, we'll notify you through email within the application. It may take up to 3 weeks to review your documents before we can send your application to the IND. If we need additional documentation from you, this may prolong the review period.
Once your documents have been approved, we'll send your application to the IND. It takes an average of 4-6 weeks for the IND to decide on your application and inform the embassy you chose in your application that you can collect your MVV there. We'll communicate the approval or any delays with you via email.
If it is necessary for you to travel long distance to your nearest Dutch embassy/consulate to collect your MVV, please take into account not to book this flight or trip before you have received our residence permit approval mail.
Once the IND has approved your application, we will send you a confirmation by email. This will contain your IND registration number (V-number) and information about the issue of your entry visa (MVV). Next, you'll have to make an appointment at the embassy that you indicated in your application to collect your MVV. There, you'll be interviewed and asked to submit your biometric data. This data will be sent to the IND.
Your entry visa (MVV) will then be put in your passport anywhere from one day to three weeks after your appointment, depending on the embassy's policy. If you wish to know the time frame at a particular embassy, we advise you to contact them yourself. You can find a list of Dutch embassies and consulates here.
Please note these essential conditions:
You can only collect your entry visa (MVV) at the embassy in your home country that you choose at the start of your application
If you did not choose to collect your entry visa (MVV) in your home country but in another country, please note that you must be legally residing in that country for at least 3 months.
Once you've collected the MVV, you can book a ticket for your trip to Amsterdam. We advise you not to book your ticket beforehand. Your MVV is valid for 3 months, and you must travel to the Netherlands within this period.
Check out our Upon arrival page for detailed information on your arrival.
About three weeks after having provided your biometrics at the embassy, your residence permit card should be ready for collection. We will send you an email once your application has been approved with instructions on how to collect your permit. For the latest updates in this procedure, please check our Upon arrival checklist.
