in education in conservation
Many conservation specialists within the tripartite partnership of UvA, RCE and RMA participate in the curriculum of the UvA Conservation Department in the Ateliergebouw on the Museumplein. This way the students take part in national and international research and conservation projects. The SRAL also participates actively in the UvA Master’s programme, lecturing the Master students and supervising the Post-Master students in the specialisation of paintings conservation.
In addition, a number of mainly national museums and cultural heritage institutions constitute important partners concerning the training of future conservators, supplying objects and research projects for students and trainees to work on or participate in. Moreover, the UvA Conservation Department has established partnerships and collaborations with national and international associations, universities and colleges. These alliances stimulate valuable contributions to the training programme and provide a broad supportive network concerning developments in education, research and promotion of the conservation discipline.
Ever since the University of Amsterdam started with the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage training programme, Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) has been a valuable partner. In 2005, the existing conservation programmes of the Cultural Heritage Agency, then ICN, and the SRAL merged into the current programme at the UvA. SRAL used to train conservation students in the specialisations of Paintings and Painted Objects, Historic Interiors, and Modern Art. Today, the latter specialisation continues as Contemporary Art. All specialisations are now fully incorporated in the UvA programme. A close relation remains. SRAL staff members contribute to the general training programme, and in particular to the UvA specialisations of Paintings and Historic Interiors.
The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) staff has a significant role in the training programme. Many conservation researchers lecture on specific topics, while students collaborate with RCE-researchers on their research projects, both during their Post-Master programme and as part of their MA-thesis prior to that. In addition, artworks from the RCE collection are used as case studies during the training programme for research and conservation treatment. Moreover, the Contempory Art students spend the first year as Post-Master trainees in conservation at the RCE Conservation Department.
Within the framework of the Erasmus+ programmes, lecturers and students take part in educational projects in order to benefit from special learning and teaching conditions that collaborative projects provide. Our Conservation Department collaborates in Erasmus funded student projects, such as the interdisciplinary project on Ethics and Ethnographic Objects Conservation: EthCon, and the collaborative project on Historical Techniques in Arts and Crafts: HiTec.
Teachers also share their expertise abroad, for example on Artist Interviews. A four-day workshop was organised for the conservation students of the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallin in collaboration with Kumu Art Museum for an interview with Merike Estna in 2016. A similar workshop was organised for the contemporary art conservation students at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in collaboration with the Picture Gallery for an interview with performance artist Barbis Ruder in 2017.
The UvA training programme in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage is a full member of the European Network for Conservation-Restoration Education - ENCoRE. The main objective to promote research and education in the field of cultural heritage, based on the directions and recommendations given in the Professional Guidelines of the European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers Organisation E.C.C.O. and the Document of Pavia of October 1997.
