To help ensure a demonstration runs safely, we provide more information and guidelines for those present on campus at the time.

The UvA’s goal is always for protests on campus to be peaceful and for everyone to continue feeling safe. If you unexpectedly find yourself in an unsafe situation, you can call 020 525 2222 for help as quickly as possible.

At the UvA, everyone is free to protest and make their voice heard. That is part of university life. Among the thousands of students and staff who study and work here, there are also people who do not wish to protest, who feel unsafe or unwelcome because of protesters’ actions, or who hold different opinions. This diversity of viewpoints is also part of the university.

The main principle is that the demonstration should proceed peacefully and ensure social and physical safety for everyone on and around the campus. There is no place for (the preparation of or incitement to) intimidation, violence, or vandalism.

Are you attending a class, studying, or working on campus during a protest?
On campus, you may receive instructions to ensure everything runs smoothly—please follow these instructions. If the demonstration unexpectedly leads to unsafe situations, leave the campus via the designated safe routes. Follow the instructions from our security staff. If you still find yourself in an unsafe situation, call 020 525 2222 for immediate help.

Are you involved in a protest on campus?

These guidelines can help you stay safe during a demonstration:

  • Be clear with yourself about the goals and messages of the demonstration, and how and with what means the protest is being carried out. Decide whether you can support them. Make your own decision carefully.
  • During the protest, monitor whether the content or method of the protest changes, and continue to assess if you still support it.
  • If you notice the protest is no longer peaceful, leave the demonstration.
  • If the protest unexpectedly leads to unsafe situations, leave the campus via the designated safe routes. Follow the instructions from our security staff.
