Luiza Bialasiewicz’s research focuses on EU foreign policy and geopolitics, with a focus on the Mediterranean and North Africa. In particular, her research has examined migration management at the EU’s external borders and the role of third states in the out-sourcing of EU border controls, as well as wider strategies of securitisation of the Mediterranean space. Most recently, her work has looked at the re-scaling of the governance of migration within and beyond the EU’s borders and the changing spatialities of humanitarian assistance and refugee reception.

As professor at the UvA, Bialasiewicz will continue her research on the new mobilities and im-mobilities that are fundamentally reshaping European space, focusing in particular on the urban dimension of the transformations of European governance.

About Luiza Bialasiewicz

Bialasiewicz joined the UvA’s department of European Studies as associate professor in 2011 and was named Jean Monnet Professor of EU External Relations in 2013. In addition to her current chair, she has held a permanent visiting professorship at the College of Europe where she teaches an annual seminar on European Geopolitics.

Bialasiewicz obtained her PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder where she was also a National Science Foundation Research Fellow (1997-2000). She was appointed lecturer (assistant professor) of Human Geography at Durham University in 2002, and in 2006 senior lecturer (associate professor) of Political Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Bialasiewicz is the recipient of various grants and awards, including two Jean Monnet Grants, a Marie Curie Grant and a National Geographic Society Global Exploration Fund Grant. She has also held funded visiting fellowships at leading research centres and institutes for advanced study in Canada, the United States, Japan, Austria and Italy, as well as several visiting professorships across Europe and North America. She serves on the editorial board of several top-ranked journals in political geography and international relations, and has published extensively in leading peer-reviewed publications such as Political Geography, Environment and Planning D: Society and Space, European Urban and Regional Studies, Eurasian Geography and Economics and Geopolitics.
