Opening of the 2024-2025 Academic Year: The Wonder of Science
On 2 September Edith Hooge, will be opening the academic year for the first time as the new President of the Executive Board. The programme will feature an area of research that has excited human curiosity for centuries, but in which there is still much to discover: our universe. Two mini-lectures will make sure we embark on the new academic year filled with new insights and inspiration.

Opening by Executive Board President Edith Hooge on the governance of the university
Astronomer Nathalie Degenaar takes us into the cosmos (mini-lecture on the mystery of black holes)
Musical interlude by UvA students
Science historian and computational linguist Rens Bod will give a mini-lecture to explain that ancient ideas about the universe are surprisingly timely and inspiring
Amsterdam Music Lab researchers let us participate in their musical experiment on catchy music
Language
Dutch will be spoken during this event. English speakers will be able to make use of live translation via headset.
